Why Impact Testing Matters in Grinding Media Production
In the demanding environment of a grinding mill, theoretical hardness is not enough. A grinding ball must be able to withstand continuous, high-energy impacts without shattering. This is why impact testing is a cornerstone of our quality control process.
At our testing facility, we utilize a 10-meter drop ball impact tester. This equipment simulates the extreme conditions found inside large SAG mills. By dropping a heavy weight onto the steel ball from a specific height, we can measure its impact fatigue life.
A high number of drops before failure indicates excellent toughness and structural integrity. Our forged steel balls consistently exceed industry standards in these tests, often withstanding over 24,000 to 36,000 drops depending on the size and application.
This rigorous testing isn't just about meeting standards; it's about ensuring our clients don't experience unexpected mill downtime. By verifying the breakage rate is ≤1% before shipment, we help mining operations maintain uninterrupted production and avoid the costly process of clearing broken media from mill liners.
